I recently purchased a DSM-750 but couldn't get it to connect to my media center.  There were some certificate errors in the event log.  I contacted Dlink and after a long time they decided that the unit needed to be replaced.  I received my replacement unit a few days ago and still can't get this thing to connect.  There are no more errors in the event log but it still won't connect.  I tried connecting the device on my laptop which is running Vista ultimate and it connected fine.  So I decided to format my media center pc and start new.  Fully patched the system and connected my extender to my PC and it worked.  I did an application install which required a reboot.  Now my device will not connect to my MC PC.  Connection error is what I keep getting.  The event log is clean as to know errors.  It doesn't even record a MC logon or anything has been made.  I am connecting wirelessly through my Dlink DIR-655.  Now my laptop is experiencing the same issues that my main MC PC is having, connection failure.  Please, if anyone has any adive Iwould greatly appreciate it.

what application did you install before the reboot?

What AV/firewall software are you running?

Thanks Ian for responding.

After a clean install and patching my VMC with SP1 I installed the following applications:

Webguide, MyMovies plugin, vmcNetflix plugin, and Daemon Tools which required the reboot.

I am using Windows Live OneCare for AV/firewall.

My laptop isn't running any of these plugins however but it is running OneCare.  I do receive these messages in the event log of both machines:

Log Name:      Media Center
Source:        Mcx2Dvcs
Date:          7/1/2008 11:20:04 PM
Event ID:      411
Task Category: None
Level:         Warning
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      RockChok
Description:
Windows Media Center Extender setup detected the following non-Windows firewalls: Windows Live OneCare Firewall

But searching on Technet says that if Event ID 501 and 400 appear you can ignore this message, which they do.

I did a full reset of the DSM-750 this morning and same results on both workstations.  I have changed my wireless encryption to WPA/TKIP and that didn't help.  I also have an Xbox 360 and configured media center usage for it.  It worked great with all the added plugins.

One more detail.  When media center initiates the connection after plugging in the 8 digit key it tries to configure the extender, which I think is the last step, for about 3 minutes and then fails.  However, the extender shows that it is trying to communicate to media center but fails in about 30 seconds.

I don't know if this is a router issue or extender issue.  The difference between the DSM-750 and the 360 is that the 360 is hard wired and the extender is connecting wirelessly.

I am at a loss.

Disable the AV and firewall for now then test the extender, see if it connects

Thanks Richard for the response as well.  I have turned off the firewall before but not AV.  I will try both when I get home and report my findings.

This may help, if it’s a OneCare or Firewall problem http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/mediacenter/firewall.mspx

Thanks for the info.  I read those documents and my setup is as stated.  I turned off AV and firewall, no dice.  My 360 is working great as an extender.  I hard wired the DSM-750 with AV turned off and still nothing.

More info.  Turned off all security, wireless and AV, and firewall.  I am able to connect to my laptop but still not my main VMC.  Could it be one of the plugins I installed?  VMC plugins installed: My Movies, vmcNetflix, and WebGuide.

Well, getting no where so starting over.  Formatting pc again.  Once system is fully patched and before OneCare installed, I will connect the extender.  If it goes well I will install MC plugins one at a time and reboot between each install to see what breaks the extender.  Then install OneCare.  Does anyone have any sugestions as how to build the system properly?

That’s what I would do, install the MCE addins one at a time until it kills the extender.
